Did you know that your skin covers a total average of 20 square feet, protecting you from the elements, makes you look good, regulates body temperature and allows for the wonderful sensations we get to experience of heat, cold and most importantly touch?
We wear our skin for the rest of our lives and we want to protect it. Here’s 5 things you should know about why wrinkles, age spots and dry skin occur and how we can help to overcome them.
1. Normal Aging
The aging process your skin undergoes which causes age spots, wrinkles and eye bags occurs naturally as the body oil production slows down leaving the skin without a protective layer. This decreases the skin’s ability to retain moisture, becoming dry and function inefficiently in harsh conditions.
When your skin experience dryness, your body react to push more moisture to the surface of the skin to rehydrate. This process forgoes the deeper tissue (Dermis) and causes the skin cells to divide more slowly as the inner layer becomes thinner. Deeper layer (Hypodermis) of skin, which provides the framework for the exterior surface of the skin, loosens and unravels causing wrinkling and sagging to occur.
2. Burns, UV
Burns from heat and UV rays are also causes of aging skin. The surface skin, acts as the body armour but due to different skin types, it can only withstand so much depending on what level your skin type is. When the surface skin is no longer able to withstand the heat and UV rays, it begins to turn red, painful and sometimes blister occur.
This occurs as the moisture and the protective oil evaporates and turns to vapour from the heat, which leaves the skin exposed to the harsh environments. This is why sunscreen is so important, and we encourage you to apply them every day.
3. Cigarette Smoke
From smoking or simply an unfortunate passive smoker, what is inhaled becomes toxic to your body. Not only is it very harmful with links to cancer, but also dries the skin out accelerating aging, wrinkles, age spots and dry skin.
This is caused by the smoke entering the lungs which contain high amounts of free radicals (think back to chemical and physiology 101). Free radicals are essentially atomised aggressive molecules that have had their bonds split. These free radicals effectively go crazy, attaching themselves to Oxygen (O2) molecules destroying and limiting oxygen supply. They also attach to living cells such as walls of your human body, lungs, & throat, causing damage.
On the bright side, our body functions can eliminate this threat through antioxidants from Vitamin E. However, our body has its limits and does not produce enough antioxidants and is focused on clearing the free radicals. As such, the skin starts to become dry and suffer the effects of aging.
4. Air Pollution
Every person in this day and age is surrounded by air pollution and more importantly so is our skin. As mentioned, what protects your skin is the thin layer of oil the body naturally produces. However, when the air pollution becomes too intense, the health of our skin is affected.
Air pollution reduces the body’s Vitamin E and Antioxidants level as your body has to work twice as hard against air pollution by producing the antioxidants and using up valuable Vitamin E. Your body reacts and start to age with the appearance of wrinkles, age spots and dryness.
This is why, when you go to the mountains or places with low level of pollution, you feel refreshed. This because is your body is not working as hard and expending excess energy on Vitamin E and antioxidants production.
5. Air-conditioning
Did you know that the air-conditioning systems works through a system called ‘Phase Conversion’. Effectively, this means that when a liquid converts to a gas it will absorb the heat. As hot air rises, it is sucked into the air-conditioning unit flowing over cold, low pressure evaporator coils with cool air being distributed around.
PROBLEM! When this occurs, it also sucks out any moisture in the air and blows out cold dry air. Effects on your body is similar to what has been mentioned, with the protective oil on your body drying up, the lack of moisture in your skin causes your skin to dry up. This increases the occurrence of wrinkles, age spots and dry itchy skin.
You want a solution to the long term problem.
